Ali Hazelwood’s Love, Theoretically is getting a film adaptation with some help from another bestselling novelist, Deadline reports.
Hazelwood’s comic romance, published in 2023 by Berkley, tells the story of physicist Elsie Hannaway, who supplements her income as an adjunct professor by acting as a fake girlfriend for single men. She discovers that one of her client’s brothers is her professional nemesis, Jack Smith, and develops feelings for him. In a starred review, a critic for Kirkus called the novel “a dynamic rivals-to-lovers romance.”
Amazon MGM Studios is developing the film with Colleen Hoover, the bestselling author of books including It Ends With Us and Reminders of Him, among its producers. Sofia Alvarez will write the screenplay and direct the film; she previously wrote the screenplay for the 2018 film adaptation of Jenny Han’s To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before. Executive producers for Love, Theoretically include Alvarez and Hazelwood.
Hazelwood’s 2021 novel, The Love Hypothesis, about the romance between a graduate student and a biology professor, has also been adapted as a film, written by Sarah Rothschild and directed by Claire Scanlon. That movie, starring Lili Reinhart, Tom Bateman, and Rachel Marsh, is scheduled for release on Sept. 23.
