Taylor Jenkins Reid is headed back to the 1970s with her next novel.
Atria will publish Reid’s The Last Days of Vic & Coco next year, the author revealed in an interview with Elle. The novel will follow Victoria Lucchese and Colette Wilson, two pool hustlers in Arizona in 1974 who hatch a plan they hope will lead to a massive payday.
Reid made her literary debut in 2013 with Forever, Interrupted and scored a massive bestseller four years later with The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. Another hit book, Daisy Jones & the Six, followed in 2019; the novel, about a 1970s rock band, was adapted into a miniseries starring Riley Keough, Sam Claflin, and Camila Morrone. Her most recent novel, Atmosphere, was published last year.
Reid told Elle that she was tapped out creatively after writing Atmosphere until she came up with the idea for her new novel in the shower.
“I just went, ‘Pool hustlers,’” she said. “For me, the question of whether to write a story or not is always this question of, ‘Do I see it?’ And I just saw it.…I recognize this is going to sound cheesy: On some level, I do feel like these stories choose me. I don’t have a choice. The pool hustlers idea comes to me, I go, ‘I have to write it. Whether anybody likes it or not, I have to write it.’”
The Last Days of Vic & Coco is slated for publication on March 2, 2027.
